My Dear Confreres,
The season of Lent is an yearly opportunity to grow in Grace and be bathed in the passionate love of God manifested in the life, sufferings, death and resurrection of Jesus. The passionate love of Jesus for His Father, His Fathers’ Will and His Father’s Mission proved decisive in offering His life as a sacrifice.
The first and inevitable message is an invitation to ‘rend our hearts and not our garments.’ If rending one’s garments is meant as a sign of sorrow and repentance, or even of anger for that matter, it is easy to see that this is only an external sign which need not at all signify any real sorrow or repentance. Very often those who rend their garments harden their hearts. Sorrow and repentance are of the heart and not of the body.
When one is prepared to rend one’s heart, one can look forward to a new way of being a Christian. Lent is all about this new Christian life which presupposes and demands a changed heart which, in turn, necessitates a changed way of life. Life can be lived on different levels. The lethargic level, the enthusiastic level, the committed level, the pilgrimage level, the transformed level and the new life in the risen Christ are all within our reach. People at the lethargic level are seldom, if ever, found to be burning with zeal for things spiritual. They live and are happy to be alive, but do not reflect about the deeper meaning of life. Those at the enthusiastic level try to balance their spiritual life and the life in the world. They may not often succeed, but they try. The committed are people who know their priorities and, even when they are immersed in the worldly aspect of their lives, are fully committed to their faith and religious convictions. The pilgrims are seekers, seeking for the deeper meaning of life. They do not know when the pilgrimage will come to an end and, precisely because of that; they double their efforts to discover the purpose and the true meaning of their lives. The transformed are people who have allowed themselves to be touched and shaped and formed by their belief in God and are captivated by the beauty of life. The new life in the risen Christ is ours only if we have allowed ourselves to be crucified with Him. This is a process, a life long process, and every serious Christian must undergo this process in order to make himself worthy of the new life. Go for it, enroll yourself, and choose to hang on, rather than hang, the cross with Christ. Then there will be Easter and Alleluia.
